Thinking about a therapy or service dog for your autistic child? Don’t let funding be a barrier.
In the Self-Determination Program (SDP) at the Regional Center, you have more flexibility and control over how your child’s budget is used, including funding for a service dog. Here’s how you can utilize the program to support the costs associated with funding a service dog:
Obtain Professional Recommendations: Secure letters or reports from healthcare professionals, teachers or service provider specialists that outline the necessity of a service dog and how it will benefit your child or adult.
Assess Your Child/Adult Needs: Clearly document why a service dog is necessary for your child’s well-being and development. This specifically includes how the dog will support their specific IPP goals and support needs.
Independent Facilitator: When ready, contact me and we’ll navigate the process of including a service dog in your child/adults’ budget and IPP.
Collaborate with Your SDP Team: Work with your SDP team (Regional Center Coordinator, FMS Company & IF) to ensure all necessary paperwork and approvals are in place before visiting a dog.
Purchase Your Puppy: Once your SDP approves the service dog and the funding is included in your spending plan, contact the breeder to proceed with the visit and purchase. We recommend San Diego - Goldendoodles. Your FMS company can arrange the one-time payment with the company or dog breeder.
These steps will assist in securing approval for the expense. Consider also requesting an increase in your Self-Determination Program (SDP) budget to cover the new costs associated with your service dog.
